During World War II Nagoya castle is used as the Tokai district army headquarters and the administration office of the Nagoya POW camp.

The main donjon, small donjon, golden shachi, Honmaru Palace, northeast turret, and other structures are destroyed in air raids by the US Army Air Force. The southwest, southeast, and northwest turrets and the Omote-Ninomon Gate survive.
