The Robert R and Julia L Plane House located at 301 3rd Ave SE in Independence, Iowa, is locally significant as a modest example of the Stick Style. The residence was built in 1885 and retains a large amount of integrity despite an addition to the rear of the house and an enlargement of the front porch. Although more simply decorated, these alterations maintain the style and proportions of the original portion of the house. The Plane House is important because it remains a unified statement of the Stick Style. - NRHP, 27 August 1999
