An Old-growth Redwood Forest

Muir Woods National Monument is situated within Redwood Canyon, a deep, forested valley at the southern foot of Mount Tamalpais approximately eight miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge and two miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Muir Woods is located within an extensive conservation area extending across the western half of the Marin Peninsula, from the Golden Gate on the south to Point Reyes and beyond in the north. - US NRHP

1907/00/00 William Kent and Elizabeth Thacher Kent donate 295 acres of the redwood forest to the federal government, preserving the heart of a rare surviving old-growth redwood forest in Marin County, California.
1908/00/00 John Muir Honoree After President Roosevelt suggest naming the woods after Kent, Kent declines the honor and asked that the woods are named after John Muir. "This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world." - John Muir
1908/01/08 Theodore Roosevelt US President Muir Woods National Monument is established by President Theodore Roosevelt through Proclamation 793, the tenth National Monument designated under the Antiquities Act of 1906.
1917/00/00 US National Park Service Architect Administration of Muir Woods is transferred within the Department of Interior from the General Lands Office to the newly created National Park Service.
1921/00/00 Due to additional gifts of land by the Kents, Muir Woods NM is expanded under the Antiquities Act through Proclamation. It will be enlarged again in 1935. Future expansions will be made, primarily to provide buffer and administrative support areas.
1922/00/00 Daniel P Hull Architect Custodian's Cottage, or the Superintendent's Residence, is built at the upper south entrance on Old Muir Woods Road. Since enlarged, the rustic-style frame building was originally designed by Daniel Hull and built by Henry T McKallor of Oakland.
1922/00/00 L H Skidmore Architect Custodian's Cottage, or the Superintendent's Residence, is built at the upper south entrance on Old Muir Woods Road. Since enlarged, the rustic-style frame building was originally designed by Daniel Hull and built by Henry T McKallor of Oakland.
1935/00/00 Civilian Conservation Corps Builder The CCC builds an addition measuring 18 by 14 ft is built on the northwest side of the Custodian's Cottage using materials that match the original.
1935/00/00 Edward A Nickel Architect NPS Regional Architect Edward Nickel and Regional Landscape Architect W G Carnes design an addition for the Superintendent's Residence in the same style as the original.
1945/05/19 UN delegates from 46 different nations, attend a memorial service for President Roosevelt at Cathedral Grove in the Muir Woods. The US Navy band opens the ceremony and then Major Tomlinson of the NPS speaks, followed by Pedro Leao Velloso of Brazil.
