The Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam was built in the early 20th century Scheepvaarthuis a shared head office for six shipping companies where they sold tickets for voyages to the Dutch East Indies, Africa and other destinations. The lot on Prins Hendrikkade was close to Oostelijke Handelskade, the quay where the ships dock and depart from.
Designed by architect Van der Mey the Amsterdam School style of architecture, the ornamentation and embellishments that characterise this style is inspired by the Art Nouveau. Van der Mey invited colleagues to work on the project, turning it into a 'Gesamtkunstwerk', or total work of art. The team of young artists used maritime motifs throughout the structure. Waves, sea creatures and ships where applied to stained-glass windows, sculpture, furniture, carpets, chairs and wallpaper.
After three years, the first phase of Scheepvaarthuis (Dutch for 'House of Shipping') was completed and travelers came to book their glamrous voyages in stylish surroundings. The most popular destinations were the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and Africa, but ships also sail from Java to New York, China, Japan and South America. Today the booking counters remian.
