1906/00/00 O C Simonds Landscape Architect OC Simonds prepares a plan for the new botanical garden and arboretum, a joint project between University and City of Ann Arbor, combining a gift of 80 acres from the Walter and Esther Nichols family together with the Woodmansee and Mummery.
1922/00/00 O C Simonds Landscape Architect U of M Regents appropriate $2,000 to establish the Peony Garden at the Nichols Arboretum for planting a large collection of herbaceous peonies donated by Dr W E Upjohn, a medical doctor, founder and president of The Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company.
1927/00/00 Aubrey William Tealdi Landscape Architect Peony Garden opens to the public. Aubrey Tealdi initially planted 280 different cultivars, adding 38 more over the next 5 years. As of 1990, 196 of the original 318 cultivars still remained, making the Arb a significant repository of old peony cultivars.
