Elst

  • Type: Town

Elst is a town in the municipality of Overbetuwe,Gelderland,Netherlands, situated in a fertile river delta between the Rhine (Nederrijn) and Waal. The flat, orchard-rich landscape has been shaped by centuries of Roman and medieval settlement, making it a center in the Betuwe region.

The town is notable for Saint Martin's Church, which preserves remains of the Temples of Elst. Temple II, one of the largest Roman temples north of the Alps, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Frontiers of the Roman Empire. The surrounding region is notable for fruit cultivation, especially apples, cherries, and pears.

Elst is also historically significant for its role during World War II, particularly in September 1944, during Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem. Positioned between Arnhem and Nijmegen, the town lay along a crucial Allied corridor and suffered heavy damage from fighting. Its post-war reconstruction shaped much of the modern town while preserving its historic and archaeological heritage. — AsNotedIn
