A Weathered Mill on Seneca Creek
Black Rock Mill is an 1815 mill ruin on Seneca Creek, south of Germantown, Maryland, in Seneca Creek State Park. Built by Thomas Hilleary on land first patented in 1760, the structure operated for more than a century as both a grist mill and sawmill, passing through several owners as it served the surrounding farming community. Through the 19th century it was revived and maintained by Nicholas Offutt and later run by members of the Offutt family into the 1920s. The mill declined in the mid-20th century, even after producing lumber for Liberty Mill in Germantown, and changed hands multiple times before the Maryland Forest and Park Service purchased the property in 1973. Extensive stabilization work followed: the deteriorated roof was removed, rotted interior timbers were cleared, metal grates were installed in the windows, and a gabled roof frame, sack hoist, and interpretive displays were added to explain the mill's historic function. The ruins offer visitors a view into the region's early industrial landscape. Access it from the Seneca Ridge Trail or park in the small paved lot, despite the missing roof, the remaining stone structure and interior displays remain in good condition. - AsNotedIn
